How To Catch Thornback Rays
Thornback rays are becoming more and more wide spread with fish easily targetable across many regions in the south of the UK.
Feeding on a diet of crustaceans, shrimps, small fish and marine worms they are often found over sandy, gravelly, or in particular muddy sea beds.
Standard beach tackle consisting of a 4-8oz rod and medium sized multiplier reel is all that is required. A pulley rig or fixed paternoster carrying 4/0 hooks will suffice and the bait of choice should be relevant to the venue. Bristol Channel thornbacks are very forthcoming to squid, yet in the estuaries of the south hams a live prawn bait can be deadly.
