We realise that is a bold statement, but if there has been one fishing line that we’ve grown fond of in recent years, it would have to undoubtedly be Varivas Yellow Sport. When it comes to fishing lines, you need something you can depend on and once you’re happy with a particular make, we really do believe in sticking to it. Look at it another way- our fishing is dictated by tides, weather and fish movement’s, so by keeping some constants in our selection of tackle, it’s one less thing to think about.
So when we say that Varivas Yellow Sport is our favourite fishing line of all time, it would be no exaggeration. Considering we stock a vast range of lines and have used most of them between us over many hundreds of hours spent by the water, that’s quite some claim.
So just what makes Varivas Yellow Sport such a popular choice? Over the years we have heard of and witnessed some exceptional circumstances and catches that support that claim, here’s just a few-
• Common skate over 200lb landed on 25lb Varivas Yellow Sport.
• 8/0 hooks opened out before the shock leader knot fails when pulling for a break on 25lb Varivas Yellow Sport, numerous times!
• 22lb blonde ray landed on 12lb Varivas Yellow Sport.
• A double shot of conger totalling over 30lb in weight successfully dragged from the kelp on 20lb Varivas Yellow Sport.
• Tope exceeding 70lb from the shore on 25lb Varivas Yellow Sport.
A good mainline is strong, resistant to abrasion, consistent in its diameter and smooth to aid casting. We can honestly say that Yellow Sport ticks each of those boxes and more.
The 12lb breaking strain is ideal when ultra long distance casting over clean ground is the order of the day. The 18lb works great on a fixed spool reel over mixed ground.
The 20lb is perfect for when the going gets tougher and the 25lb is pretty unstoppable under any circumstances.
But if you really want to pull the plug out and casting distance is irrelevant, then fish should fear the awesome 30lb breaking strain.
Fishing in the dark is when the Yellow Sport really shines though- quite literally. Try it when the sun goes down and see for yourself just how highly visible it is by torch light!
The ‘Yellow’ has become our biggest selling mainline of all time and as such, it’s proved tricky at times to keep up with demand. It is manufactured in Japan so the logistics of getting it to our Bristol based warehouse are not always easy, but when we have it on the shelves, we really do recommend stocking up when you can. As well as the 4oz spool, we also list a jumbo half-kilo version that you can find HERE.
We really could be using any mainline on our reels, remember we have access to an endless selection at our fingertips. But for over twenty years now, this is THE one we swear by!
